Dec. Training

Training Starts Nov. Training Dec. Training Iditarod 2000

Happy New Year to you all.....

Doug and myself went out on tuesday last week at 4.30 pm and set off from 130
miles away with the dogs with the intention of going 65 miles then camping and
continuing 70 miles the following day back to the kennels.   We had had about
4 feet of snow on the tops.

We got through about the first hour having been rained on continuoausly and
were totally soaked to the skin.  Once we got above the rain level the snow
started and we had to break trail thru deep snow.  We did that for about 4
hours and eventually having only managed 18 miles the dogs said "no more" before
we had reached the mountain peaks so we had to turn around.  We made it back
in about 1.40 hrs but were 130 miles from the kennels so called the handlers
who reached us about 3.00 am and we got back to lincoln at 5 .30 am soaked
all the way.....pretty miserable but  ......

This weekend have been doing a small 2 day race in Glacier National Park
which was much better.

Day 1        Lost a sled runner after 1 mile !! so travelled the other 32
miles on one runner which means very slow progress so understandably i came in
16th out of 17 teams!!!!!

Day 2         Much better ...ran the distance in 3.07 hours [average about 10.6 mph ]
which was half climbing steep so thats pretty good.
Improved my average agregate finish position for both days to 10th which is
ok....only really local teams involved
got back last night about 10 pm
stiff and bruised !!!

More to follow on my return.................
